Cytorex Biosciences to present at the Southeast Venture Capital Investment Competition in Atlanta

Weston, Florida. March 2, 2006.

(Source: http://bioflorida.com/node/137)

Cytorex Biosciences, Inc., a Weston, Florida based Biotechnology company, has been invited to present at the Southeast Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC®), sponsored by the Dupree College of Management of the Georgia Institute of Technology. The event will be held on March 3, 2006 at the Huang Executive Education Wing.

This competition consists of teams of five students who will be given the role of venture capital firms. After reading the business plans of the participating companies, the student teams will have the opportunity to watch a fifteen minute live presentation of each company, and then they will perform due dilligence with a follow-up fifteen minute session of questions and answers. The evening of the event day, the teams will review the presenting companies and will make their investment decisions. The following day the teams will be presenting their investment choices to the panel of eight judges, all of which are active members of Venture Capital companies in the Southeast Region.

The VCIC® is the nation’s premiere strategy competition for venture–minded and entrepreneurial MBA students. This one–of–a–kind competition gives students from top business schools a real–world venture capitalist experience — student teams interact with real entrepreneurs from real companies with real business plans. Unlike other competitions where teams lock themselves away to mull over theoretical or historical scenarios, the VCIC® experience exposes students to a variety of activities that ultimately must be integrated into a cohesive investment strategy to be pitched to real venture capitalists. Many students hail the VCIC® as the most valuable learning experience of their MBA careers.

Brief History

In 1998, the technology boom was well under way, and business plan competitions began popping up at almost every business school. The Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at UNC’s Kenan–Flagler Business School was looking for a new twist on the old idea. What if students play the role of investors rather than entrepreneurs? What if real entrepreneurs who are pitching to real VCs pitch to students instead? Students could have the opportunity to evaluate numerous real business plans and share in the dreams of real entrepreneurs from the perspective of potential investors —what a great education for future entrepreneurs and future venture capitalists alike!

Thus was the genesis of the VCIC®. UNC, Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest participated in this new experiment in ’98, and it worked. Within two years, the VCIC went national, with four regional competitions and 27 schools. By 2002, all of the nation’s top business schools were regularly signing up, with many more knocking at the door. By 2005, two new wild card rounds had been added, bringing the number of schools participating to 40. VCIC is the only competition to regularly include teams from all top 20 business schools.

The year 2005 also marked the first international event for VCIC. London Business School held an internal VCIC and sent the winning team to the southeast region. Plans in 2006 include a new European VCIC, whose winners will join U.S. regional finalists at the VCIC Championship held annually in the University of North Carolina (Chappel Hill), Kenan-Flagler Business School. Dates for the 2006 finals are April 6-8.

While the VCIC expands internationally, it also grows at home. In 2005, a dozen schools held internal events for as many as 40 of their own students, meaning nearly 500 students worldwide were able to participate in this unique entrepreneurial educational experience. The last three VCIC championship teams started as victors at internal events.

SOUTH FLORIDA BUSINESS JOURNAL

WEBLINK: 3 to 9 February 2006: Cancer Drug takes an unconventional route

Journal of Carcinogenesis publishes research report on Cytorex Biosciences, Inc. lead compound Cytoreg®

Cytoreg® inhibits growth and proliferation of human adenocarcinoma cells via induction of apoptosis

Weston, Florida.
January 14, 2006

Cytorex Biosciences, Inc. (Cytorex), a Florida based biotechnology company, announced today the publication in the January 2006 issue of the Journal of Carcinogenesis, of a research report related to in-vitro efficacy testing in cancer cell lines and normal cell lines, with Cytoreg®, their lead anti-cancer compound.

"Cytoreg® inhibits growth and proliferation of human adenocarcinoma cells via induction of apoptosis", was submitted for publication by James Kumi-Diaka, DVM, PhD (corresponding author), from Florida Atlantic University (FAU), and the other co-authors: Manzur Hassanhi, MD, PhD , professor of Immunology and Cancer Research Scientist, from the University of Zulia (Venezuela), Brown Jayaan (FAU), Kendra Merchant (FAU) , Carlos M Garcia (Cytorex), and William Jimenez (Cytorex).

Dr. James Kumi-Diaka and Dr. Manzur Hassanhi, authors of
the research report about  Cytoreg® published in the
January 2006 edition of Journal of Carcinogenesis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cancer is one of the devastating neovascular diseases that incapacitate so many people the world over. Recent reports from the National Cancer Institute indicate some significant gain therapy and cancer management as seen in the increase in the 5-year survival rate over the past two decades. Although near-perfect cure rate have been reported in the early-stage disease, these data reveal high recurrence rate and serious side effects including second malignancies and fatalities. Most of the currently used anticancer agents are only effective against proliferating cancer cells. Thus attention has been focused on potential anti-cancer agents capable of killing cancer cells independent of the cell cycle state, to ensure effective elimination of most cancer cells. The objective of this study was to test the Chemosensitivity and potential mechanism of action of a novel cancer drug, Cytoreg®, in a panel of human cancer cells. Methods: the study was performed using a series of bioassays including Trypan blue exclusion, MTS Growth inhibition, LDH-cytotoxicity, TUNEL-Terminal, DNA fragmentation, Apoptosis Assay, and the Caspase protease CPP32 activity assays. Results: Cytoreg® induced significant dose- and time-dependent inhibition of growth in all the cells; with significant differences in Chemosensitivity (P <0.05) between the target cells, becoming more apparent at 48 hr exposure. Cytoreg® showed no significant effect on normal cells relative to the tumor cells. Growth inhibition in all the cells was due to induction of apoptosis at lower concentrations of Cytoreg® (>1:300). Cytoreg®-induced caspase protease-3 (CPP32) activation significantly and positively correlated with apoptosis induction and growth inhibition; thus implicating CPP32 as the principal death pathway in Cytoreg®-induced apoptosis. Conclusion: Cytoreg® exerted a dose-and time-dependent growth inhibitory effect in all the target cells through induction of apoptosis via the CPP32 death pathway, independent of hormonal sensitivity of the cells. The present data indicate that not only could CPP32 provide a potential target for regulation of Cytoreg®-induced apoptosis but also that Cytoreg® could play a significant role in chemotherapeutic regimen in many human malignant tumors.

“This is the first of several research reports about Cytoreg® we plan to submit during 2006 to peer-reviewed journals", said Dr. James Kumi-Diaka, Professor of Biology of cancer at Florida Atlantic University in Davie, Florida.

“Cytoreg® has great potential as an anti-cancer compound, and additional research has shown that this compound’s toxicity level is very low if compared with current approved chemotherapeutical agents”, indicated Dr. Manzur Hassanhi, Professor of Immunology and Cancer Research Scientist of the University of Zulia (Maracaibo-Venezuela).

Both Kumi-Diaka and Hasannhi, have lead since 2003 a multinational research team involved in the discovery of Cytoreg® as an anti-cancer agent.

According to Cytorex Vice-President & CFO, William Jimenez, who is also a co-author of this research report, "Cytoreg® is a therapeutic agent for cellular regulation, with antineoplastic properties which may also be used to fight immunological diseases. Cytoreg® constitutes a balanced mixture of strong and weak acids in an aqueous medium; resembling a buffer without using salts. Cytoreg® is transferred into a cellular system through ionic transport due to its low molecular weight, where each ion acts concurrently in cells, turning Cytoreg® into a highly efficient “smart-drug.” Cytoreg®’s numerous mechanisms of action are exerted through the cellular membrane".

Runner-Up: Controlled Semiconductor, Inc., Florida

ConSemi is manufacturer of LCD and Semiconductor Process Equipment. We hold several patents in the industry ranging from photomask through failure analysis. ConSemi launched our MRT (Mask Repair Tool) in 2004 and have sold several of these systems to the top LCD manufacturers in the world. We have only 1 competitor in this industry and currently we are 3-5 years ahead of them in technology. ConSemi has developed and patented systems and processes in the production and test of the latest leadframe process with our L2S2 product. We have also patented and will be soon launching our FATcat System (Failure Analysis Tool). This system has NO competitor and our only competition is a dangerous and uncontrollable process using fuming nitric acid. ConSemi also has several other products in R&D.

Runner-Up: Innovation Asset Group (IAG), Oregon

Innovation Asset Group, Inc. (IAG) is an Oregon c-corporation formed in May of 2002. It has created a next-generation software system called DECIPHER™ that enables companies, in real-time, to track and manage the most valuable of their assets - their intellectual property (“IP”) and other intangibles, related contracts, and how it all interrelates. Most companies in our target market have no clear visibility of these critical assets and the important information around them. As a result, they are: (1) Not effectively managing their most valuable asset base; (2) Exposed on the liability side more than necessary (3) Shipping (and paying for) products & services after contracts have expired; (4) Not collecting (or paying) royalties; (5) Using more administrative personnel than necessary; and (6) Paying more money and spending more time than necessary to roll up this information for compliance and internal reporting purposes. We go directly at this problem with an integrated solution. Having launched in late 2004 and already with eleven customers from coast to coast and internationally, all of whom are providing excellent feedback, IAG is positioned for a major land grab in a significant market where exit transaction values are extremely interesting.

FundingPost announces the winners of Pitching Across America(TM), the largest Venture Capital competition ever

NEW YORK, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- FundingPost (
http://www.FundingPost.com) proudly announced today the winning companies from its first annual Pitching Across America(TM) competition. FundingPost, which has been introducing entrepreneurs to investors for almost 4 years, established the competition in which 140 Venture Capital Funds and Angel Investors participated as judges, voting on 400 business summaries from emerging companies nationwide. This was the largest Venture Capital competition ever organized, sponsored by Wolf Block, Holland & Knight, TriNet, and PRNewswire.

The emerging companies were evaluated on a scale of 1 to 10. Judging criteria consisted of several key points including: the professionalism of the written summary, current stage of development (customers, revenue), competitive advantage and need in the marketplace, feasibility for success, and whether the company is "VentureWorthy(TM)."

"We were thrilled with the response and the level of interest from both the Venture and Angel community and the entrepreneurs who participated in Pitching Across America(TM)," said Joe Rubin, Director, FundingPost, "The investors voted these entrepreneurs as some of the most promising emerging companies in the U.S."

"FundingPost's latest Pitching Across America event was stellar," said Bill Funcannon, Partner, OVP Venture Partners. "As a judge representing the top-tier fund in the Pacific Northwest, I was impressed by the 50 companies selected from a list of more than 400 entries. The start-ups chosen for the final round represented real balance of companies between earlier- and later- stage investing. There is a natural mix of winners from industry segments based on market opportunities, and a balance between risk and reward for venture capitalists and entrepreneurs alike."

"The FundingPost competition provided an efficient vehicle in which a busy VC could quickly evaluate many investment opportunities," said Daniel Penberthy, Rand Capital. "Much has been said about entrepreneurs always having their 'elevator speech' ready. Well, this is the 'elevator of today' and entrepreneurs need to be able to summarize their business opportunity in a few paragraphs instead of minutes, if they are to be successful in today's fundraising environment.

FundingPost's competition helped to accomplish this, and provided an introduction to three new investment opportunities in my region."

Cytorex presents Murine Melanoma Study Poster in Drug Discovery Boston

Weston, Florida August 2, 2004. Cytorex Biosciences Inc. (Cytorex), a privately owned Biotechnology company of Weston, Florida will present at the Drug Discovery Conference on August 9, 2004. They will display a poster titled: “Effect of Cytoreg® on Biomarkers in B16-F10 Murine Melanoma”. The topic is the result of a pilot study performed by Dr. Manzur Hassanhi, MD, Senior Research Scientist of Cytorex Biosciences Inc., and Dr. Elzbieta Izbicka of the Institute of Drug Development (IDD), San Antonio, Texas. Over 300 submitted poster abstracts were reviewed by a poster review committee to determine the 150 posters to be displayed at this year's conference. Poster topic categories were chosen to mirror the topics covered in conference sessions.

This coordinated effort will enable attendees to easily locate the posters that relate to their areas of interest. All posters are located inside the exhibit hall. “Cytoreg® is a novel anticancer drug candidate which uses Hydrofluoric and Sulfuric acids as active compounds. Upon completion of an in vivo study performed under a separate agreement, formalin preserved lung tissue with B16-F10 metastases was provided for biomarker analysis. Quantitative analysis of Bcl-2, Bax, Smac/Diablo, Survivin, Raf-1, and (P) Raf-1 was performed in thin sections from three representative tumor metastases selected from the drug treatment group (.654 mg/mouse, p.o., qd x 5 to end) and the corresponding control vehicle. Two biomarkers (Bcl-2, Smac/Diablo) were below detection limits. Cytoreg® induced some down regulation in Bax. Biomarkers levels of Survivin and the (P) Raf-1/Raf-1 ratios were decreased in the Cytoreg® treatment group. These finding are consistent with the pro-apoptotic activity of the drug and the ability of Cytoreg® to interfere with tumor signaling pathways in B16-F10 lung metastases” according to Dr. Elzbieta Izbicka, Head of the Molecular Targets Laboratory of IDD.

Cytorex Biosciences Completes Cytotoxicity Testing With Its Anti-cancer Compound Cytoreg®

For Immediate Release

WESTON, Fla./EWORLDWIRE/July 7, 2004 --- Cytorex Biosciences Inc. reports it has concluded cytotoxicity testing in cancer and healthy cell cultures with its proprietary compound Cytoreg®, with selective cytotoxicity activity against cancer cells, high anti-oxidant and free radical stress capability. In healthy cells tested at the same doses as cancer cells the cytotoxicity profile is very low, making Cytoreg® a potential safe and effective first line agent for the treatment of different cancer indications.

Testing performed by CeeTox Inc. in rat hepatoma (liver cancer) cells, normal hepatocytes (liver), and normal kidney cells indicate a distinctive cytotoxic activity of Cytoreg® in cancer cells. "Normally I do not impress easily, but occasionally a project has something truly large to offer, and I think Cytorex could be one of these. In CeeTox, we are very impressed with the exciting Cytoreg® data, for which we appreciate the opportunity to be part of its success," indicated James M. McKim, Ph.D., President and CEO of CeeTox Inc. of Kalamazoo, Mich.

"Results show a substantial difference in the levels of inhibition of cancer cell growth, as well as of toxicity, which reinforces the therapeutic potential of Cytoreg®. Cancer cells present a non-coherent membrane regarding the receptors which make them easily identifiable by Cytoreg®, as if they were naked or without their regular 'shirts,' and Cytoreg® can detect them easily to induce their death, cutting the proliferation and migration of the same. Really, we are in front of a great innovation in the fight against cancer," said Dr. James Kumi-Diaka, PhD, Biology Professor and Cancer Research Scientist of Florida Atlantic University in Davie, Fla.

Cytorex's preclinical data was evaluated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI-Frederick) last year, and has allowed Cytorex to reach a collaboration agreement with the NCI through an extensive research and development program with Cytoreg® as potential treatment for Glioblastoma Multiforme (brain cancer).

The Cytoreg® innovative and breakthrough technology allows the pharmacological use of compositions that combine organic acids and inorganic acids (hydrofluoric and sulfuric, among others) to treat disease.

Gathering Of Angels In Pinehurst Features 2 North Carolina Companies

May 19th Event Hosted at Pine Needles Lodge Features Two NC Companies and Three from Out-of-state

PINEHURST, N.C. 05-17-2004
-- The Gathering of Angels event in Pinehurst will feature two promising high tech North Carolina companies. Both Taper International, located in Southern Pines, and DarPharma, a Chapel Hill-based biotech company, will make 20 minute presentations to accredited investors at the Pine Needles Lodge.

The two N.C. companies will be joined by Cytorex Biosciences, a Florida biotech company, Global Educational Technology, an Atlanta info-tech company and Cord Partners, a biotech company from Los Angeles, California.

“We were delighted with the response from companies for the opportunity to present in Pinehurst,” said Tarby Bryant, the President of Anasazi Capital, and the organizer of the Gathering of Angel event. “Almost as soon as we posted the event on our web site, we started getting inquiries from companies located across the United States. We think the local angels and local economic development professionals will really enjoy getting to meet these companies.”

The two North Carolina companies are engaged in different parts of the high tech world. Taper International (
http://www.betterhandcuffs.com/products.html), makes high tech, products for law enforcement agencies. Their most recent innovation are prisoner restraints that can not be picked by prisoners. The process is patented and was developed in conjunction with the assistance of many law enforcement officers.

DarPharma, (
http://www.darpharma.com) is focused on drug discovery and development in the area of dopamine D1 agonists, the most promising CNS target for disorders including Parkinson’s diseases, Schizophrenia, and Cocaine Abuse.

“I was happy that we were able to attract such promising North Carolina companies,” said Tom Vass, the local partner who is helping Bryant organize the angel events. “As a state, we need to do everything possible to help native, small, high tech companies obtain the growth capital they need to grow and prosper, and we need to think of ways to introduce companies from the venture-rich areas of the RTP to the venture-poor areas of the state.”

The Gathering of Angels will become a monthly event in Pinehurst, and the next one is scheduled for June 16. There is no charge for angels to attend, but pre-registration is required, either on the Gathering of Angels web site or at
www.corporateinvestment.net.

Cytorex Biosciences Inc. Develops a Ground Breaking Compound for Potential Treatment of Cancer and Other Diseases of Immunological Origin

WESTON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 2003--Cytorex Biosciences Inc., (Cytorex) a South Florida biotechnology company, announced today that they have developed a potential new treatment for cancer and immunology related diseases based on the use of inorganic acids such as Hydrofluoric Acid (HF), with low toxicity profile and a high level of efficacy called Cytoreg®.

"This is a breakthrough development in the pharmaceutical industry. This technology is based on the use of inorganic acids as active compounds to treat cancer and other diseases of immunological origin," indicated Dr. Manzur Hassanhi, MD, PhD, Senior Medical Officer of Cytorex. "This opens the door for the development of treatments for other diseases," continued Dr. Hassanhi.

"We have so far used a battery of in-vitro screening to test the Chemosensitivity of Cytoreg® in human cancers. Results are promising with respect to tumor response. Preliminary data suggest that Cytoreg® has significant inhibitory and anti-proliferating effect on Human breast, testicular, prostate and lung cancers, which were all the cell lines tested at the time," indicated Dr. James Kumi-Diaka, DVM, PhD, Professor of Biology at Florida Atlantic University. "In terms of mechanism of action Cytoreg® induces a selective and dose-dependent Apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the target cells. These preliminary findings are of both diagnostic and therapeutic significance. However, these results need to be translated into in-vivo animal studies - to involve a large animal population, in order to obtain statistically significant results," concluded Dr. Kumi-Diaka.

"We treated five animals with B-16 melanoma, using 1:100 dilution treatments daily. Tumors in four of the animals did not grow, and then one that did appeared to reach a state of no growth. There was no metastasis. A dose response assay is required in a large group of animals. Preliminary data suggest that Cytoreg® definitely is effective against B-16," indicated Dr. Joseph Bryant, Director of the Animal Model Studies Division of the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Bryant performed a limited animal study in B-16 melanoma cells in C57-BL mice.

Additional research with very promising findings was conducted performing several in-vitro and in-vivo assays between the years 2000 and 2002 with grants from Cytorex to Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research, Inc., a non-for-profit research facility located in Plantation, Florida.

Cytoreg® was developed by Venezuelan Chemist Prof. David Martucci, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Cytorex. Martucci has spent over 25 years in research related to the use of inorganic acids for several applications including "pharmacologically active buffered acid solutions," with patent pending status in the United States and Internationally. "This is an invention for humanity," said Martucci. "After we complete all the required testing by FDA in the United States and Drug Approval regulators in other countries, we expect to market our compounds at very reasonable prices in order to make them available to people who cannot afford the cost of cancer treatments available today," concluded Martucci.
